Today, Derek and I have a little toast at home to celebrate the achievement of our dental practice for receiving a SME Award from DHL SCMP Business Annual Award. Three years of continuous refinement and unfaltering belief that if we always put our patient first, all the good things shall follow.
I would like to share, Derek’s speech during the online award ceremony.
” On behalf of @centralsmilehk , we are truly honoured and grateful to the “HK Business Awards”, South China Morning Post and DHL for awarding us the SME Award for 2020. Thank you.
Central Smile was founded just over three years ago. I never could have imagined the opportunities and challenges we have faced over this short period.
Although the name Small and Medium Size Enterprises gives a notion of a “petite” industry. But in fact, SME’s account for almost 50% of total employment in HK. So collectively we are by no means “small”.
There have been obvious challenges for SME’s and government initiatives such as the “Employment Support Scheme” and “SME Loan Guarantee Scheme” have been instrumental in keeping many businesses afloat. We hope such schemes will continue to support local businesses as we overcome this pandemic together.
I am optimistic about our future. As a society, we have faced many challenges before; The Asian Financial Crisis, SARS, social unrest and now COVID. Hong Kongers have always been entrepreneurial, spirited and hard working. Qualities fit for battle hardened society to flourish. There are many opportunities on the horizon and we look forward to expansion possibilities locally and further afield in the Greater Bay Area.
Personally I would like to also take this opportunity to share my gratitude and recognise the people that have been instrumental. Namely my wife @rosannewng, my parents Vivian and Richard Baram, the management team and all team members at Central Smile. Without your help, Central Smile would not be what it is today.
We don’t take this award for granted. It will spur us on. We hope to continue to develop into something we and our society can be proud of.”

The lions are back.
Stephen and Stitt are not just ordinary bronze lions, the 85-year old lions still bear injuries from the Second World War and the social unrest in 2020.
The lions have guarded the entrance of HSBC headquarters in Central since 1935.
During the Second World War, the two lions were sent to Japan to be melted down, but were saved at the sudden end of war. An American sailor recognised the lions in a dockyard in Osaka in 1945 and the lions were rescued and restored to their original positions in October 1946. Bullet holes can still be found on Stephen’s left flank. (𝘗𝘩𝘰𝘵𝘰 𝟺)
During the protest on New Year’s Day in 2020, the lions were sprayed with red paint and set on fire. They were removed from public view for restoration since then for the third time in their history.
The lions are back on public view after first phase of restoration works. Welcome back. Many visit the lions today, taking photos and touching his head and paws.
Full restoration can be done only when British experts can fly to Hong Kong.

Stephen, the growling lion, was named after Alexander Gordon Stephen, the Chief Manager of HSBC in 1923, and Stitt, the quiescent one, was named after Gordon Holmes Stitt, formerly Manager Shanghai.

The global COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we do business, work, and create value all around the world. For example, in the past several months, we have all become Zoom & Microsoft Teams experts! While the rest of the world looks forward to re-opening economies after the pandemic, Hong Kong is also looking forward to recovering from months of social unrest. How will Hong Kong digitize, optimize, and strategize in a new normal, returning to economic growth and leadership? This new normal is a huge opportunity for Hong Kong to drive its transition to a digital economy and create a buoyant innovation ecosystem, linking corporates, start-ups and capital.
"HK Startups Meet Multinational Companies Series" is an ongoing series of meetings, showcasing Inspiration, connecting start-ups with corporates, and building a successful, sustainable innovation community in Hong Kong.
Join us on August 28 for the fourth session: Knowledge. Education is being reshaped for students and teachers alike through new, innovative teaching methods, advancements in technology, and programs designed for a virtual world. So how can start-ups support the continued trend? For the next 18 months many predict there will be a balance of in-person and virtual as COVID continues to limit and challenge traditional learning. In Hong Kong's road to recovery meet some of the start-ups that will help strike a healthy balance, create new opportunities we have not thought of and be integral to the education sector.
