When I was a dental student, graduation seems to be the end of a marathon. I though I’m done after 5 years of Dental training, but it was merely the start of the journey.

Upon graduation, I worked in a clinic as a dental assistant while waiting for my government NDOP/ “Houseman-ship” posting. I was introduced by the kind dentists there, to the other aspects of Dentistry. The communication. The time management. How to work as a unit.

When I was working as a dental officer in a government clinic and hospital attachments, it was an important phase which has shown me how much more I can learn. I know it’s probably not a good idea to admit that you have much more to learn on social media.

But that IS a fact.

Realising how much more you need to learn and being honest with yourself, puts you at a mentality where you will constantly push yourself to learn more.
I was lucky to be surrounded by great senior officers and peers in my gov clinic, as they’ve taught me a lot of clinical tips and soft skills. When you have to treat waves of patients, provide best stat treatments with the limited time you have, those sharing from experiences really matter a LOT in improving efficiency. I’ve always seen people who have taught me new knowledge as my mentors, more so if they’re willing to share. Being able to work with the right kind of people was such a great jumpstart to being a better clinician.

Now that I’ve entered a new workplace, I’m blessed to be able to witness more complex cases, learn and train with new technologies, picking up Digital Dentistry while reinforcing my knowledge in the bread and butter of Dentistry. This all wouldn’t happen without being guided by my great mentor/sifu & lovely seniors. •

Of course, this post is not telling you that you can’t learn on your own and you must have someone to mentor you.
But being able to admit that you still have a lot more to learn and being humble enough to seek knowledge from others...I think those are great powers.

There are 7 dangerous Inner Demons that cause procrastination… and I’ll reveal to you what they sound like your mind… so you can slay them whenever you encounter a demon.⁣⁣

Let’s start with a push-up as a simple analogy.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Pretend you are doing push-ups, here’s how each of your 7 Inner Demons would sound like...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
1. The Perfectionist.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“Alright, I want to make sure I do this correctly. So I’ve got to make sure my arms are square and my body is in the right angle⁣⁣
⁣⁣
How far apart should my arms be? Should my feet be together or apart?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Hmm… maybe I should wait until I get my new sports gear to do the push-ups, I don’t want to do it in improper clothing.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is the perfectionist.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And let me ask you, if one person does no pushups but another person does 10 imperfect pushups every day...⁣⁣
⁣⁣
After 100 days, who would be further ahead?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The person who does the imperfect pushups.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is the first demon.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
2. The Measurer.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“Well, I can do 5 pushups. But that guy over there can do 10 pushups, and that girl can do 20. Man… I suck. Why bother trying?”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is the inner demon that compares itself to everyone, and when it finds someone who is better it feels defeated and stops trying.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Let me tell you… there will ALWAYS be someone better than you at any particular thing. So it’s dumb to think that.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Instead, focus on your own improvement and just do the pushup.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
3. The Futurist⁣⁣
⁣⁣
“Maybe I want to build up my chest muscle. But what if I do it wrong and my triceps get too big? What if it looks weird compared to my biceps?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Then my shirts won’t look good. And I have to train my back to keep my body balanced…”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
It’s just a pushup.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This demon thinks into the future and wants everything to fit perfectly. It wants everything to be laid out neatly in front of them before taking that first step forward...⁣⁣

Skot Suyama 陶山 is a Mandopop record producer best known for penning hit tracks such as Kimberley Chen’s 爱你, R-Chord’s 爱不需要装乖, Yoga Lin’s 感同身受 and many more. Born in Seattle and of Japanese-American ancestry, he came to Taiwan after the success of his first song, Karen Mok and Alan Kuo’s ‘爱死你’ which kickstarted his interest and contributions to the Mandopop scene at large. A well-respected veteran producer within the industry for his ability to write hit songs, Skot has been a direct contributor to many representative works of the contemporary Mandopop scene over the last decade. In the last few years, his passion has led him to start his own record label SKR Music, under which he hopes to hone artistically-sound artists and music which bring Mandopop to the wider world.

1. What is Vocal Production?
What does a vocal producer do?
2. Gear basics. Mic, Pre-Amp, EQ, Compressor
3. Setting up the Pro-Tools session, getting ready for the artist
4. Meeting the artist: getting to know what kind of artist they are, and the psychology of recording an artist. The mental and psychological aspects of a singer
- When to push
- When to listen
- How to read a singer and what they really mean when they complain
- How to get the arrangement super comfortable in the headphones, and balance the reverb, and delay so that the singer can give you their best performance
- The ‘groove’ of a recording session
- How much ‘pre-roll’ to give
- How much time to give between takes for the singer to res their voice
- The different backgrounds of singers and how that effects the recording technique. For example, Singers that developed their skills from Karaoke or singing competitions often like to sing the entire song through to get the right emotion for each part. Singer Songwriter or demo singers who have a recording background usually prefer to go part by part, etc. While seasoned veteran singers may prefer to speed through a recording session either because they’re busy and need to go to their next engagement, or because they already know the power of the computer and vocal editing.
- How long should you chat with a singer before recording? Get to know them and start building trust before you even press record.
- How to keep the singers confidence always high, so you can get the best performance out of them.
- When to make a comment, and when to just let the singer keep singing. What happens to the singer’s confidence when you give a negative comment like ‘You’re out of tune’, or ‘you’re rushing’ etc.
- When to show the artist another way of singing a certain line. And when to give up on your idea.
- How to create a bond with the singer in very short amount of time, so that you both are on the same team and both doing your best for the song

Skill Sharing course:
1. Recording the artist and selecting takes, different approaches to recording the song

2. Finding harmonies, and recording harmonies. Going in depth with many examples. How to find the 3rd, and the 5th harmonies and how to adjust them according to what the chords are playing behind. 5. Adjusting the timing of vocals / Aligning vocals. Show step by step using previous pro-tools sessions of songs that I’ve created. How to edit the timing of rap vocals. Example pro-tools session : (陈忻玥)Just You and Me, (李杰明)神秘

6. Trouble Shooting Vocal Editing. Get rids of pops and clicks, and bad cross fades. Show examples of each, and how to solve common vocal editing problems. Example pro-tools session : (傅又宣)Better This Way Unplugged
