Having a career change and starting afresh is never easy, it is indeed fun and challenging. I knew I wanted to sing and perform, my vision was clear. This was about some 10 years ago and I wanted to explore every musical genres. A mentor suggested that I should explore audiophile recording, and I was introduced to Mr Alan Ip and Mr Eugene Pao. I wanted a rearrangement of a hit song from the 70s but didn’t expect such a hefty fee on the copyright. Things were somehow put on hold indefinitely.
I was relentless with pursuing my dreams, a few years later I was signed with a small independent label and released my first debut album, among which Eugene contributed two original compositions, “ Not Just For Today ” & “ Lazy Afternoon “.
Everyone knows he is a well established and talented guitarist.I believe he is an underrated composer as well. Did you know Eugene is also very capable on film scoring? I recall visiting his home on many occasions , he would passionately show me his vinyl collections and sharpened my ears through his HIFI system, even though I was a newbie, I received so much encouragement from this mentor. It was a truly exquisite learning experience and I am forever thankful.
Eugene may seem very cool to many but once you’d get to know this gentle soul, there’s a lot yet to be discovered, do considered yourself lucky if you have experienced the humorous side of him…🤪
Eugene, paying my dues is never easy but with your support and encouragement I am not alone, thanks a bunch my guitar hero ❤️

‘A Note to Harmonica Folks’
What’s next?
Since the day I was born, I have known the most prestigious harmonica competition in the world, The World Harmonica Festival (WHF). Every harmonicist around me see this as the olympics of harmonica, especially when they are both held once every four years.
My father’s ensemble King’s Harmonica Quintet was one of the very first few Asians harmonicist that appeared in the competition in Germany after the format of the competition turned from taped recording to live performance. In 1997, 3 years after I was born, they won their ‘World Championship’ in the WHF. I witnessed it.
It was a historical moment not only because was it a massive honour to be crowned in such reputable competition, it was the period when Asian harmonicists were approved by the Western.
Since then, the global harmonica community started to merge and interact. While harmonicists from the West continue to develop their artistry and career under a relatively strong cultural foundation for instrumental music, harmonica music to be exact, by virtue of the legends such as Tommy Reilly, Larry Adler, Toots Thielemans, Asians harmonicists struggle to further their artistry without the corresponding cultural foundation. A market for harmonica music in Asia simply do not exist.
Nevertheless, Asian culture values diligence and discipline. With the competition as the highest possible way to be rewarded as we develop our artistry, countless players began working day and night towards this very, if not only, visible goal.
Up till this day, you’d be surprised if there aren’t any Asian standing on the prizing podium in the international harmonica festivals. According to a Facebook post of the renowned Taiwanese Harmonicist in 2013, Lee Hsiao-ming, ‘If you show up at a harmonica festival, you can easily be surrounded by a group of ‘World Champion’s all queuing up for that plate at the buffet.’ Be him a chord harmonica player from an ensemble, a soloist at the open category or a 10 year old kid from the youth category… all claiming to be the ‘World Champion’.
Now the question is, Is the ‘World Champion’ in 1997 still the same ‘World Champion’ now? Or are we unconsciously abusing the only system we can count on to gain qualification to ourselves?
As Gerhard, the president of the World Harmonica Festival, has also repeatedly emphasized before, champion of any event of the WHF competition should NOT claim himself / herself as the World Champion. It should properly be addressed as Champion of the " XXX event" of the World Harmonica Festival.
While varies important figures in the global harmonica community started participating in this fierce debate, I was curious about the root of this controversy.
Would anyone accused Usian Bolt of abusing his Olympic gold medals to pursue further in his career? Would anyone question Danill Trifonov’s artistry if he claim himself the winner of Chopin Piano Competition? Could Michael Jordon ever obtain a ‘fake’ NBA championship?
Obviously, there is nothing wrong about winning and taking pride off an award. The real issue instead lies in the opposite side of the question. Is the existing harmonica competition rigorous enough to qualify the winner a ‘World Champion’? Or, should a ‘World Champion’ even exist in a musical setting?
In order to understand what a truly rigorous musical competition is, we began digging into the competitions of all instruments at the highest calibre. For instance, when studying the difference of the format of the International Tchaikovsky Competition with the World Harmonica Festival, we have realised how far behind the harmonica competition is constructed. I won the Solo Championship in the World Harmonica Festival 2013 only by playing a total of 10 minute of music. While a contestant at the qualifying round at the Tchaikovsky Competition would already have to prepare up to 30 minute of music. Meanwhile, not a single competition in the classical world would claim themselves the competition of the best. It seems like the title ‘World Champion’ could only be justified when it’s within sports, where the result can be calculated and compared. We can’t calculate art.
We have came a long way since the harmonica was invented 150 years ago. And I’m extremely excited to see new generation of player arising from all around the world. Nevertheless, while festivals are taking a pause during covid, we should make the best use of this period of time and rethink about how we could contribute to the culture and further bring our instrument to the next level.
So, what’s next? 🤔

An Underground show is special because you get new bands, veteran bands, English bands, French bands, marching bands (we did have one) and of course good old fashioned Cantopop bands. But that’s not what Nowhere Boys is. They’re Cantopop, they use ‘old’ music (we’ll get to that), but they’re not old fashioned.
What first struck me was the violin. Standing in the corner was keyboardist Fisher Kan who decided to whip out a violin for their first song 天外飛仙 (Little Fairy). In their musical video, the band members dress up in classical Chinese outfits and do Kung-fu outside Yau Ma Tei Tin Hau temple, and rock-out next to the Star Ferry pier. They didn’t show up in costume but the whimsical, yet hardcore vibe was just as present. The violin was a little quiet, it could have been the mics, or it could have been their placement, but it would have been great to hear it more.
The second song 狂想曲 (Rhapsody) gave more surprises yet. Released in 2015 near the beginning of their career, the song is an eclectic mix of hard rock, Baroque piano, choir music, rap and more. Nowhere Boys is a band which excels in both recorded and live forms; they understand the difference between the two media and artistically transform themselves depending on what their stage is. In the Rhapsody music video, the band members don different outfits showing the many sides of the band, someone’s the Joker, someone’s a cop, they’re in an old timey Hong Kong style barbershop – then everyone changes roles. The chorale section has very strong Queen vibes and seems to reference Bohemian Rhapsody. For such a chaotic video, the performance is actually incredibly tight but not overwhelming. On stage, however, they change completely. The whole performance is a musical whirlwind. The hard rock starts, pinning you to your seat. Then the baroque piano solo comes in – in the video, it’s underscored by black and white visuals – here the whole band stops and points synchronized at the pianist to great applause. The performance is intense; they’re jumping around the stage yelling into mics but then comes the chorale. Everyone stops and sings in perfect acapella harmony despite having just run a marathon.
There’s something to be said for a Cantopop band incorporating so much classic rock, pop and classical music into their performances. Hong Kong is a city where almost everyone has a Grade 8 in musical performance, but becoming a musician is not a career most people will consider. It’s unrealistic, useless, for a hobby only. Our professional choirs and opera groups are performed in by amazing award-winning singers who are actually bankers and doctors. This means that just in terms of classical music knowledge, Hong Kong really is world class – much of local slang actually comes from musical terminology – but it’s ignored. Nowhere Boys whether they know it or not, is bridging that gap. As a rock Cantopop group, they excel perfectly with creative lyrics, great stage presence and top-notch performance, but more than that, they encompass the musical soul of Hong Kong, telling those that play classical music that the pop world does have a space for them and simultaneously letting popular music fans know that the classical side also has a place. Their creativity and performance style weren’t just for a good show, it was inspirational. At least it was to me – a classically trained musician writing rock show reviews.

I think the very essence of this series is being real. I absolutely love to opportunity to film original songs, even more so when it was written by faith (no pun intended). We got to know Faith through a mutual friend and when I was shown this song, I knew this was something I was looking for. Faith has a rather shy personality but her voice is incredible. To write a song like this with so much conviction is truly admirable. The music, the melody, the way her voice molds together is truly astounding. Its music like this that really inspires this series.

Lyrics:
I'm waiting for my time to come
minutes, hours, days rush by
and though sometimes my patience runs thin
You say that the wait
is worth it all
And when a pair of hearts break
two more will collide
the world keeps turning and turning
You'll be at my side
cause now, I think I know
That Your love is real, and Your love is faithful
and Your love is kind, and Your love is permanent
there's nothing more, I want than to adore
Your love
Sometimes envy runs thick in my blood
when eager hearts beat for each other
but You grab hold on to my wondering heart
You say that I'm Yours
I'm Yours
You were mine from the start and I was Yours
and though I never called Your name
mine was always on Your lips
I was made for You
take my heart, take it all
I am made for You
And when a pair of hearts break
Yours and mine will collide
my world keeps turning and turning
You're here at my side
cause now, I know
And Your love is real, and Your love is patient
and Your love is kind, and Your love is infinite
there's nothing more, I want than to adore
Your love

"Good People" by Jack Johnson
You win
It's your show, now
So what's it gonna be
'Cause people
Will tune in
How many train wrecks do we need to see?
Before we lose touch of
We thought this was low
It's bad getting worse so
[Chorus:]
Where'd all the good people go?
I've been changing channels
I don't see them on the TV shows
Where'd all the good people go?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow
They got this and that and
With a rattle a tat
Testing one two,
Now what you gonna do?
Bad news, misused,
Got too much to lose
Gimme some truth
Now whose side are we on?
Whatever you say
Turn on the boob tube
I'm in the mood to obey
So lead me astray by the way, now
Where'd all the good people go?
I've been changing channels
I don't see them on the TV shows
Where'd all the good people go?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow
Sitting round feeling far away
So far away but I can feel the debris
Can you feel it?
You interrupt me from a friendly conversation
To tell me how great its all gonna be
You might notice some hesitation
'Cause it's important to you, it's not important to me
Way down by the edge of your reasons
It's beginning to show
And all I really wanna know is...
Where'd all the good people go?
I've been changing channels
I don't see them on the TV shows
Where'd all the good people go?
We got heaps and heaps of what we sow
They got this and that
With a rattle a tat
Testing one, two
Now what you gonna do?
Bad news, misused, give me some truth
You got too much to lose
Whose side are we on today, anyway?
OK, whatever you say.
Wrong and resolute but in the mood to obey
Station to station desensitizing the nation
Going, going, gone.
