'Urban Folly – Electric this' shows two women in their Plexiglas bubble, lying in front of a cityscape in LED and neon light.
The background of the work is the acrylic neon sign Urban Folly neon with lights in various colours in an abstract array, representing buildings. In front of the buildings are two women lying down, mother and daughter, cut out from transparent Plexiglas. Over their heads is text (engraved in the Plexiglas), each speaks half a poem, discussing how to be modern with yet allusions to ancient Chinese habits and symbols. Behind the board are speakers left and right (actually, they are the beloved Hong Kong cell phones) that say the English text in Cantonese. The title of the poem (Electric this) is carved in a Plexiglas cloud and hangs over the buildings like a neon sign. The entire work is put in a black protruding frame as if they are inside a casing or exhibited in some kid’s shoebox diorama.
The Urban Folly neon sign creates the virtual environment that influences the way this mom and her daughter live their lives, lying in front of the city as if on the HK beach. And the mom passes on her urban myth while the daughter comments on her mom as a ‘sheep’ that follows fashion and fads to feel unique, not aware of the transparent bubble she, the daughter, lives in herself. But inside is the ancient Chinese core, unbroken.
Through the conceptual visualisation formed by the root-like winding of the neon light, the work hopes to trigger an underlying light and reflection that resonates with citizens in a certain and also manifold way on this modern and traditional soulful land. The continuity of life in progress and the shifts in the flickering and shimmering of neon lights show us something clearer. It is the way and the opening in the frame that one might have overlooked, the energy of life in all the old and fancy of the new from the past to the present...

What the jury said: This tender, tense and somewhat mysterious series of poems is accompanied by exquisite illustrations by the Taiwanese illustrator and author, Animo Chen. The book opens with several double page spreads of a stunning landscape of mountains, trees, sea and houses before the words begin. After that, on most pages, each poem is accompanied by an evocative and striking illustration which does not simply reflect the text but encourages the reader to think and wonder. The quality of the art work almost takes your breath away. The series of poems have an enigmatic, Japanese, haiku/tanka type quality and there is no clear line of narrative. Readers’ expectations are likely to be challenged when the surprise ending is revealed. It should be noted that the poetry is written in Taiwanese, the mother language for many people in Taiwan but not recognised as an official language.

———————
“The Hill We Climb”
Amanda Gorman
When day comes we ask ourselves, where can we find light in this never-ending shade? The loss we carry, a sea we must wade. We’ve braved the belly of the beast, we’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace and the norms and notions of what just is, isn’t always justice. And yet the dawn is ours before we knew it, somehow we do it, somehow we’ve weathered and witnessed a nation that isn’t broken but simply unfinished.
We, the successors of a country and a time where a skinny black girl descended from slaves and raised by a single mother can dream of becoming president only to find herself reciting for one. And, yes, we are far from polished, far from pristine, but that doesn’t mean we are striving to form a union that is perfect, we are striving to forge a union with purpose, to compose a country committed to all cultures, colors, characters and conditions of man.
So we lift our gazes not to what stands between us, but what stands before us. We close the divide because we know to put our future first, we must first put our differences aside. We lay down our arms so we can reach out our arms to one another, we seek harm to none and harmony for all.
Let the globe, if nothing else, say this is true: that even as we grieved, we grew, even as we hurt, we hoped, that even as we tired, we tried, that we’ll forever be tied together victorious, not because we will never again know defeat but because we will never again sow division.
Scripture tells us to envision that everyone shall sit under their own vine and fig tree and no one should make them afraid. If we’re to live up to our own time, then victory won’t lie in the blade, but in in all of the bridges we’ve made.
That is the promise to glade, the hill we climb if only we dare it because being American is more than a pride we inherit, it’s the past we step into and how we repair it. We’ve seen a force that would shatter our nation rather than share it. That would destroy our country if it meant delaying democracy, and this effort very nearly succeeded. But while democracy can periodically be delayed, but it can never be permanently defeated.
In this truth, in this faith, we trust, for while we have our eyes on the future, history has its eyes on us, this is the era of just redemption we feared in its inception we did not feel prepared to be the heirs of such a terrifying hour but within it we found the power to author a new chapter, to offer hope and laughter to ourselves, so while once we asked how can we possibly prevail over catastrophe, now we assert how could catastrophe possibly prevail over us.
We will not march back to what was but move to what shall be, a country that is bruised but whole, benevolent but bold, fierce and free, we will not be turned around or interrupted by intimidation because we know our inaction and inertia will be the inheritance of the next generation, our blunders become their burden. But one thing is certain: if we merge mercy with might and might with right, then love becomes our legacy and change our children’s birthright.
So let us leave behind a country better than the one we were left, with every breath from my bronze, pounded chest, we will raise this wounded world into a wondrous one, we will rise from the golden hills of the West, we will rise from the windswept Northeast where our forefathers first realized revolution, we will rise from the lake-rimmed cities of the Midwestern states, we will rise from the sunbaked South, we will rebuild, reconcile, and recover in every known nook of our nation in every corner called our country our people diverse and beautiful will emerge battered and beautiful, when the day comes we step out of the shade aflame and unafraid, the new dawn blooms as we free it, for there is always light if only we’re brave enough to see it, if only we’re brave enough to be it.

[Update: HEY IDIOTS. IF YOU INSULT MY LOOKS THEN PROCEED TO TELL ME I SHOULDN’T INSULT ROSMAH FOR HER LOOKS YOU ARE NO BETTER THAN ME FUCKTARD. I HOPE YOU GROW SOME BRAINS ONE DAY OK?]
By popular demand I’ve transformed into Rosmah for Halloween! Posted a 2 second preview on Instagram and was shocked to see many people pissed off and asking me to respect Rosmah ? why the fuck would I respect crooked politicians you tell me?
I realized many of the angry comments are all saying the same old shit so I’ll answer them here:
“This is racist”
How on EARTH is this racist? Nobody is mocking all Malays, or all Malaysians. The subject here is only one nasty person. So I’m also racist against chinese because I did a Sun Ho makeup tutorial? Don’t be childish please. Singapore is half filled with Malays and Malaysians, many of them are my friends and I do not have a problem with either.
“This is rude”
No shit Sherlock I don’t see a need to be polite to Rosmah, whom I deem as a vile, evil person. If you want to know why I feel that way, you can feel free to read up on her wiki page: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosmah_Mansor additional bonus fun reads: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Shaariibuugiin_Altantuyaa http://www.financetwitter.com/2018/08/jamaluddin-jarjis-rm2-billion-fortune-opens-up-a-can-of-worms-malaysia-has-at-least-two-hundred-billionaires.html
I’m supposed to be polite to her? Why? Would you be polite to hitler? Don’t be ridiculous
“How would you like it if someone did this to you/your mother?”
First up I’d be fucking honoured if someone dresses up as me for Halloween, it would mean I’m famous and iconic. Tag me in your photos if you do people! Secondly, funny you guys would bring up mothers. Rosmah’s own estranged daughter and son in law wrote long glowing articles about what a stellar person she is. NOT. You can read what Rosmah’s own daughter said about her. That poem still haunts me: https://thecoverage.my/news/rosmahs-daughter-sow-law-confession-evil-mother-torture-berhati-syaitan-berajakan-hantu/ so you ask me what I would feel if Rosmah were my mom? I’d disown her as Azrene did. And nobody would mock my mother because she didn’t (allegedly) steal millions of dollars and spend it on opulent luxuries. If she did, I’d say she deserves it.
“You look like Rosmah already”/“you will look like her in future”/“mcm Babi”
Ok sure lol
“Mind your own business Singaporean”/“why don’t you do LKY? Scared right?”
Don’t be juvenile Rosmah is internationally well known anyone can talk about her, she doesn’t belong to you Malaysians to discuss ? And I won’t do a LKY look because I respect him. Not because he is a Singaporean or Chinese but because he made Singapore what it is today and he isn’t corrupt ??♀️
“I don’t like Rosmah either but you shouldn’t mock how people look like”
Usually I’d agree with that but hey did Rosmah care about the feelings of Malaysians when she (and Najib) allegedly embezzled money? If no why must you care abt her feelings when people discuss her face? Please lah before my video her face was mocked by widespread memes of her face put next to the Snow White witch, y’all Malaysians call her Hippo etc etc. My video is just one among the thousands of insults abt her face. The hypocrisy is astounding though, you guys can in one fell swoop tell me I shouldn’t insult her face, then feel free to insult my face immediately after ? #doublestandards Besides, back to point one: Rosmah’s hurt feelings are the least of my concerns sorry ??♀️
If you are confused by the mv at the end, believe it or not Rosmah actually released an album in 2013. The voice you are hearing is actually hers ? You have to see it to believe it: https://youtu.be/gfF3_JmgkDg ft: Najib plus vintage dreamy filter lol
And the comedy gold doesn’t just end here. Rosmah claims that she actually earned millions from her album sales, despite it never being sold to the public. Apparently government officials were such fans of her singing that they bought her private album... and there is nothing wrong with spending her own money on a few bags and dresses ? #icannot (Source: https://says.com/my/news/rosmah-i-m-a-naturally-gifted-accountant-who-has-earned-millions-from-my-recording-album )

The Poem:
ENGLISH:
SEX.
Have I caught your momentary attention?
Have I effectively communicated,
to our proud, tech-savy, sex-driven generation?
What we’re about to say may not surprise you;
For it’s a more-than-familiar declaration.
Allowing the bliss of ignorance to cloud you,
You dim the truth behind these realisations.
TAMIL:
Millions snatched and childhoods they take,
They muffled and shuffled them between states.
They were shoved into a dirty rooms- calendars that are blank of dates,
Having their days numbered as they await their next cruel fate.
Driven to sell their sex to complete someone else’s happiness;
They find comfort in their impending loneliness.
What’s known to be a gift from God between two in love,
For them, was a gift they never want to open.
MANDARIN/CANTO:
Now how about a more than real story,
Ripped from a mother’s lifeless arms- her baby was sold into slavery.
How unfair it is to have a future that has already been known to them,
Before they even have the privilege of knowing.
No mother would live to see their baby live a life that way,
She begged and begged but no one could hear her.
Like an invisible spirit she roamed the streets,
Helpless, until someone feels her near.
We complain daily about the rush hour traffic,
About how it holds us up for a couple of hours.
But do we know about this trafficking that makes me sick,
To have all their lives held up, they crave for ours.
ENGLISH:
Eradicate the syndicates, leave this business barren,
Give the children the forbidden fruit of education,
And open their eyes to opportunities beyond their imagination.
MALAY:
Restore their belief in love and God again,
And that their Life Purpose was still on its way.
Engulf them in a light so bright,
So that they’d never have to know their shadow again.
Break the chains that hold them captive in their minds,
And wait for a chain reaction of love,
that’s one of a kind.
