“As the world shuts its borders, it is understandable that you may feel uneasy or anxious. However, we would like to reassure our international residents living in Taipei that Taiwan remains stable. As the world changes rapidly, Taiwan’s government will remain vigilant and continue safeguarding the health of everyone that lives in our beautiful country.
Taipei City Government and the Central government are working together to execute the best disease prevention methods and practises. As a result, we have been able to have much fewer cases of COVID-19 compared to nearby countries. Despite this early success, we will not be satisfied until this virus is completely eradicated. I will outline the steps we are taking now to ensure that you and your loved ones are safe.
First off, we have implemented strict measures domestically such as strictly enforcing 14-day quarantine on all arrivals to Taiwan and banning large gatherings. We have also taken the opportunity to promote public health education while punishing the spread of false information. The effective collaboration with the Central government maintains public order and ensures everyone is able to buy necessary supplies.
Secondly, the Taipei City Government and the Central government are communicating constantly to stay on top of the latest developments. We have set up designated quarantine centres to accommodate for the increasing number of confirmed cases. We are also encouraging long-distance work and education to increase social distancing. Strategies to support and boost the economy have been put in place. Furthermore, we are rehearsing measures that will make sure Taipei City Government is fully prepared for any potential worst-case scenarios.
Thirdly, the City Government is making sure to use our resources and staff efficiently so that we are able to ramp up any response required in the coming weeks. Our plan is to follow the guidance and strategies from the Central Government to best allocate our resources without exhausting any of Taiwan’s public systems.
We must remember that Taiwan’s greatest advantage regarding disease prevention is our superb national health insurance. As a leader in the medical industry, we have over 20,000 hospitals and clinics and our health care system has a 90% customer satisfaction rate. The people of Taiwan are willing to wear masks in public places to prevent asymptomatic transmission and have a great understanding of basic disease prevention methods after the nation defeated SARS.
Here at Taipei City Government, we have an array of innovative measures to keep you safe. We have launched new taxi and ambulance services dedicated to transporting possible carriers of the virus. We are also collaborating with local hotels to provide quarantine locations for those just returning from abroad or who have been potentially exposed to a confirmed COVID-19 case.
We understand that some people may be concerned about the risks associated with public transport. To minimise the risk of infection on buses and MRT, we are disinfecting all stations and vehicles daily, with those frequently used disinfected every 4-8 hours. We are also running public service announcements at stations and on trains reminding the public of basic hygiene measures such as washing hands frequently.
If you are a foreign national in Taipei, please be assured that your wellbeing is our absolute priority. Our methods work and we are showing the world how to handle this pandemic. This is a joint effort, which is why I am reiterating the importance for individuals to listen to government health recommendations. The following 2 weeks are crucial in combatting the virus.
Taipei City Government will be doing everything in its power to keep everyone safe from the virus and we will need your cooperation to ensure our disease prevention measures are as effective as they can be.
Thank you.”
