Daily advice for HK immigrants to the West:

Regarding parenting, you need to let your children date whomever they want. If you bring your racist hierarchy to your view of your children’s dating life or marriage, you’d better not come. If you’re not prepared for your children to marry someone white, black or brown, don’t come over. This also means that you need to realign the way you view different races and the way you talk to your kids about that topic. It’s highly hypocritical to ask others not to be racist against you, only for you to be racist towards other non-white groups. That means developing an acceptance towards points of view of other races and cultures. That means modeling for your kids by having friends from different races, social economic classes and convictions. If you don't gain the multiple perspectives, even if you allow your children to marry interracially, you won’t get along with your in-laws, and your racism will create unnecessary conflicts. That just makes you a very bad person in a multicultural society. We have enough racism over here. We don’t need to have the HK version here.

I don’t know a single Mandarin . So does Dr Halina but yet we send our girls to SJKC .
Why ? - Because we understand the importance of Mandarin .
It will be an advantage for the girls in years to come .
Furthermore it’s good to master many languages including Arabic and French.

But for those who plan to send your kids to a SJKC School ...it takes lots of effort and commitment .
Firstly you are unable to teach them .
You don’t really know what they are learning as all subjects are in Mandarin.
They certainly need extra classes.
Bella & Tasha have extra classes 4x a week .
They usually able to truly speak & write fluently when they are in Standard 3 .
Anything earlier - don’t expect too much .
It takes time for them to adapt as Mandarin is a tough language .
Bella is quite proficient in Mandarin but Tasha is getting there .

Different pronunciation will bring about different meaning .
It’s challenging but will be totally worth it.
Sending to SJKC from an early age is the only way for them to be fluent .
That’s the best way - surrounded by Chinese friends and environment .
Also I loved SJKC teachers - they are as strict as can be .
Memang garang - Haha

Connection matters. When we seek to win the heart of the child, she allows us into her special world. Where there is trust and a feeling of safety, the learning follows naturally.

The children will sing. They will dance. They will speak. But that only happens when we first meet them where they are at... and accept them for who they are.

We’re on the second week of classes since reopening. I am continually humbled by all that I learn from being with the children everyday.
