“你若是不敢去德國，那希特勒就真的贏了” -- 身為集中營倖存者的作者，受邀去德國演講卻掙扎時，丈夫鼓勵她的話

("If you don't go to Germany, then Hitler won the war")

溫暖的一天讀完了這一本後勁非常強烈，而且非常值得推薦的一本書。這也是去年比爾蓋茲夏季推薦書單的其中一本。（有中文版）

身為集中營倖存者的猶太人，作者從她現在成為心理治療師，常常面對受創者的經驗開始談起。然他再開始敘述起自己小時候的故事，以及少女時代如何被帶到集中營，看見計畫型的規模屠殺，看到人性泯滅時的慘狀。她甚至有幾次與惡名昭彰的死亡天使德國醫生面對面交手，每天都面臨要繼續被虐或是被殺的兩種抉擇。

在奇蹟式的獲得拯救後，還是一連串心理創傷的開始。被救出來暫住一個德國家庭中，年幼的孩子看到骷髏般的她們，讓她感到好像離開地獄，卻成為別人夢靨的羞愧。救援的士兵中有一名趁亂要來侵犯她，但不知為何突然收手。第二天這名士兵再回來，哭著請求她的原諒，並且開始每天帶著食物或是音樂來陪伴她。後來因著歐洲地區持續反猶太的情緒（納粹結束並不代表歧視結束），她和家人前往美國投靠親戚。從非常貧困，到不斷的努力，在中年後才取得心理的學位和執業資格，用她過去傷痛的經歷，幫助別人也幫助了自己。在她回到奧什維茲集中營時，她發現她不只是需要原諒希特勒，竟然發現原來她要原諒自己 （在此就不爆雷了），才能得到完全的自由。

這本書的文筆相當好，點出了傷痛卻不悲情，誠實面對自己的恐懼憤怒，但總是向著盼望前進，而她對每個故事的處理，溫暖卻不流於雞湯。她對於傷痛，焦慮和憤怒的人，所提出的步驟，是參照她猶太家庭傳統，紀念以色列人逃離埃及奴僕身份邁向自由的過程中，在逾越節聚會中，家人們各自分享的問題：

1. What do you want? 你想要什麼？
這句看來像是廢話的問題，其實是要不斷詢問自己的。常常人們會回答，“我希望這件事情沒有發生”、“我想要對方改變”、“我希望像那個XXX一樣"、“我希望要達到那個目標,那個職位” 。但是深入去思考，多半我們想要的是內心的平靜，想要的是可以肯定自己的價值，想要的是可以有生命力的成長著。

2. Who wants it？這是誰的心願？
延續著上一題再繼續思考，這個心願真的是自己的嗎，還是誰期望投射在我的身上，還是我太需要得到誰的肯定因此渴望著？摒除了這一切他人的期待，我真正想要的是什麼？

3. What are you going to do about it？你要採取什麼行動？
摒除受害者的心態，承擔起自己的責任，最棒的方式莫過於採取行動。這些行動包括面對自己的情緒，包括認知我們擁有情緒但我們不需要被情緒掌控，包括接納自己只是人，無法掌控全局也無法改變過去，然後開始採取小步的冒險行動。

4. When？你要何時開始？
如果我們要進化而非原地打轉，“現在”就是最好開始的時候！

p/s: This may be mistaken for a poem, but it’s actually a short story, written in a slightly different style - I’ve separated the story into different verses to emphasise different parts of the texts. This is a horror story about a ghost telling us how they’re trying to deny the fact that they are actually dead...until they finally realise it at the very end. Enjoy!
