DPM Heng Swee Keat has informed me and the ministers of his decision to step aside as the leader of the 4G team. I understand and respect his decision.
Swee Keat will stay on as DPM, Coordinating Minister for Economic Policies, and Chairman of the National Research Foundation. He will however give up the Ministry of Finance (Singapore) in the next Cabinet reshuffle. In MOF he has done exceptional work, particularly this past tumultuous year. Since the pandemic started, he has delivered an unprecedented six Budgets that have supported Singaporeans and businesses, and kept everyone safe.
Beyond his portfolio responsibilities, I am confident that Swee Keat will continue to contribute actively to Cabinet deliberations, and the work of the party. Together with the Senior Ministers, he will help me mentor the younger ones in the team, to develop and identify from among themselves a new leader.
