Asian-Americans Are Being Attacked. Why Are Hate Crime Charges So Rare?
On a cold evening last month, a Chinese man was walking home near Manhattan’s Chinatown neighborhood when a stranger suddenly ran up behind him and plunged ( ) a knife into his back.
For many Asian-Americans, the stabbing ( ) was horrifying, but not surprising. It was widely seen as just the latest example of racially targeted violence against Asians during the pandemic.
But the perpetrator ( ), a 23-year-old man from Yemen, had not said a word to the victim before the attack, investigators ( ) said. Prosecutors ( ) determined they lacked enough evidence to prove a racist ( ) motive ( ). The attacker was charged with attempted murder, but not as a hate crime ( ).
The announcement outraged ( ) Asian-American leaders in New York City. Many of them protested ( ) outside the Manhattan district attorney’s office, demanding that the stabbing be prosecuted as a hate crime. They were tired of what they saw as racist assaults being overlooked ( ) by the authorities ( ).
The rally ( ) reflected the tortured ( ) public conversation over how to confront ( ) a rise in reports of violence against Asian-Americans, who have felt increasingly vulnerable ( ) with each new attack. Many incidents have either not led to arrests or have not been charged as hate crimes, making it difficult to capture with reliable data the extent to which Asian-Americans are being targeted.
That frustration erupted on a national scale ( ) this week after Robert Aaron Long, a white man, was charged with fatally shooting eight people, including six women of Asian descent ( ), at spas in the Atlanta area on Tuesday night.
Other incidents that clearly seemed racially motivated have not resulted in arrests. The police are still searching for a man who called an Asian-American mother the “Chinese virus” and spat ( ) at her child in Queens last week.
In New York State, to charge ( ) such attacks as hate crimes, prosecutors would need to show that the victims were targeted because of their race.
But proving a racist motive can be particularly difficult with attacks against Asians, experts say. There is no widely recognized symbol of anti-Asian hate comparable to a noose ( ) or a swastika ( ). Historically, many Asian crime victims around the country were small-business owners who were robbed, complicating ( ) the question of motive.
Under New York State law, certain offenses can be upgraded to hate crimes, increasing the potential prison sentence ( ). As evidence, prosecutors often point to hateful verbal statements or social media posts by the defendant ( ).
In the past month alone, several assaults ( ) on Asian victims have been reported to the police, including an attack on an older woman who was pushed outside a bakery in Queens. None of the incidents has been charged as a hate crime.
In fact, the only person who has been prosecuted for an anti-Asian hate crime in New York City this year is Taiwanese. He was accused of writing anti-Chinese graffiti outside several businesses in Queens.
Wayne Ho, president of the Chinese-American Planning Council, a social services agency, said many of his Asian colleagues were verbally harassed ( ) during the pandemic but chose not to alert law enforcement because they worried the perpetrators, who were often people of color, could be mistreated ( ) by the police.
“I asked myself, do I want this person in jail?” said Alice Wong, one of Mr. Ho’s colleagues. “Just because you put someone in jail doesn’t make them not hate anyone anymore.”
Recognizing ( ) this challenge, some law enforcement officials have called for people who commit hate crimes to attend antiracism classes as an alternative ( ) to prison.

The voice of Shaun King, a Black activist.
Hate crimes, violence, and harassment against Asian-Americans have dramatically skyrocketed in this country over the past year. This is not fake news. This is not a conspiracy theory. This is not propaganda. This is not Asian-Americans trying to steal the spotlight from African Americans. It’s math. And it matters. Let me explain why.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
I have tried to live by those words from Dr. King for the past 25 years. And I actually believe them. It’s really easy to think that what happens to one group of people that you aren’t a part of has NOTHING to do with you and won’t affect or impact you in any way at all, but that’s just not how this country works. Injustice against one group of people absolutely impacts justice for all of us.
Now, as a principle, I try to fight back against the mistreatment of people whether I think it impacts my world or not, but what I want to teach you today is that being permissive or dismissive of the mistreatment of people will ALWAYS make us all less safe. These words from Martin Niemöller come to mind…
"First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist.
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew.
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."
When we allow one group of people to be spit on, called racist names, punched, slapped, pushed, and mauled - it lowers the bar of what’s acceptable in this country for all people - period. If you are OK with Asian American children or senior citizens being spit on and called “China virus” then just understand that it’s only a matter of time until that ugliness spreads to children and senior citizens that you know and love. We have to reject all of it. We have to fight back against all of it. We have to take all of it personally.
I posted about this on Instagram and Facebook earlier this morning - and I want to address a few recurring themes that I saw in the comments.
A lot of my Black followers said something to the effect of, “But when do they ever speak up or fight for us?”
Every day. I see Asian Americans fighting and advocating and speaking out for Black folk every single day. I see them marching. I see them posting about injustices against Black folk on social media. I see them in planning meetings. Everywhere - from coast to coast.
If you aren’t seeing what I’m seeing, this is because you likely aren’t following who I’m following and guess what? You see who and what you follow. You don’t see who and what you don’t follow. But I follow hundreds of Asian American activists and leaders because I have hundreds of Asian American friends - many are as close to me as family. But if you literally don’t have a single Asian American friend, it’s probably very much the case that you don’t see them speaking up for us - but that says more about you than it does to them.
A lot of my Black followers said something to the effect of, “But what about those horrible videos of Asian people mistreating Black people around the world.”
I’ve seen those videos. They are horrible. Do you know why? Some Asian people are horrible and bigoted. Do you know why? Because every ethnic group has people that are good, bad, ugly and everything in between. Period. I’ve also seen multiple videos of Black people horribly mistreating Asian people. Does that mean all Black people are bad? Of course it doesn’t. This world has BILLIONS of African and Asian people around the world. We can’t judge BILLIONS of people off of the actions of a few. And here’s the thing - I have consistently seen Asian-American people speak out against the injustices of Asians against Black people, but again, I see that, because of who I follow, know, and trust.
But let me be even more specific - if an Asian man in Kenya does something ugly to an African, that should never mean that we then turn a blind eye to an Asian-American child being spit on in New York City. That’s foolishness. And let’s be honest, we’d never want the reverse done to us.
Race and racism are both complex and painful. Our nation, and this whole world, honestly, are so deeply mired in a ping pong of racism and violence, that people’s nerves are rightly frayed. I understand. Mine are frayed as well, but I am choosing to interrupt the status quo by speaking out. And personally, I do this without the expectation of anything in return. I am speaking out because the mistreatment of people because of their race or ethnicity or national origin is always wrong.

I personally feel that universities will fully embrace distance learning and relevant technologies will be rapidly developed as a result.

US Universities Move Classes Online
The day after colleges across the country suspended classes over fears of the coronavirus, Abigail Lockhart-Calpito, a freshman from San Antonio, ran across the Harvard campus trying to get answers. Her lectures were being replaced by online classes. Her residence hall was being cleared out. She, like thousands of others in her shoes, had a million questions: What was going to happen to her financial aid? Where would she stay? What about her credits?
1. over fears of 擔心、擔憂
2. financial aid 助學金
3. school credit

The abrupt disruption of the semester caused widespread concern and a feeling of chaos on campuses across the country. Administrators saw spring break as a chance to reset the clock in the battle against the coronavirus. One after the other, like dominoes, they announced they were suspending classes and asking students to pack up and go.
4. abrupt disruption
5. cause widespread concern

On Wednesday, the closures continued. Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of New York declared that the state and city university systems would move to distance learning, as did the University of Pennsylvania, several California State campuses, the Claremont Colleges, Iowa State, Georgetown, Pepperdine, Villanova, Notre Dame, Michigan State and Washington University in St. Louis, among others.

14. distance learning*
15. online learning
*In a nutshell, the key difference between online learning and distance learning is geography. Students can be together with an instructor and use online learning, but distance learning implies that students and instructor are separated.

“Harvard expects us to go home,” she said on Wednesday. “But home for a lot of us is this campus.” As she went from office to office, officials told her apologetically that they had found out about the orders to shut down normal life on campus at the same time that she had, and so had few answers. Private charities and individuals were responding with offers to provide temporary lodging and financial help, she said.

Ever wondered how is it like to live in Singapore? In this video, we'll show you how local Singaporeans buy their food stuff from a typical housing estate.
Many people around the world may have heard of Singapore. Yes, we're the mini country that hosted Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un in the same breadth. Just to give you a better perspective, United States is about 13,673 times bigger than Singapore or about half the size of Los Angeles, 2/3 of New York City. London is more than two times the size of Singapore and Singapore is only 2/3 the size of Hong Kong. Yes we are really a very small small city.
Home to 5.9 million population currently, Singapore is a multiracial and multicultural country with about 76% of the citizens made up by Chinese, 15% by Malays and 7.4% by Indians. We also have Eurasians in our citizen mix.
English is our first language and depending on which ethnic group we belong to, we take our mother tongue (e.g. Chinese, Malay, Tamil) as second language. The older generation (those born in the 50s or earlier) usually do not speak English because back then, English wasn't made the first language.

Shaved snow served by Wooly's.
"Shaved snow is a hybrid between shaved ice and ice cream. By taking a block of ice made with low-fat milk, flavors are infused into the blocks before it is frozen, and then shave it very fine to create a texture similar to fresh fallen snow."
Flavors available are Original Leche, Coffee, and Melon. Optional toppings include Strawberry, Blueberry, Coconut Flakes, Mochi, Pocky Sticks, Cookies 'n Cream, Graham Cracker Crumble, Captain Crunch, Fruity Pebbles, Corn Flakes, Sea Salt Leche, Chocolate Drizzle, Whipped Cream, and Strawberry Cream.
"Snow ice"—cream, milk, water, sugar and fruit, frozen and then shaved and served in cones—is popular in Korea, Taiwan and Indonesia and making inroads into the United States.

In Hawaii, "shave ice" is similar to snowballs, and is sold in cone-shaped paper cups. "Rainbow," a popular flavor, consists of three colors of syrup chosen usually for their color rather than their taste compatibility. Commonly, a scoop of vanilla ice cream or sweetened azuki beans is first added to the bottom of the cup and is capped with condensed milk.
Vendors in Texas and northern Mexico serve finely shaved ice desserts. Called a raspa, they are usually sold from a roadside stand or trailer. They come in many flavors, including leche (milk and cinnamon) and picosito (the Spanish word for 'spicy' made with lemon and chili powder.)
The dessert ais kacang served in Malaysia and Singapore is another form of shaved ice. Ais kacang was originally served with red beans but now includes various fruits and other sweet toppings.
In Japan they are known as kakigori, and in India it is called a "gola" and usually served on popsicle sticks.
In Britain the term snow cone has been used for a standard ice cream cone topped with (usually vanilla) ice cream, hence the term snow cone.
In Perú this dessert is called Raspadilla, which is served in cups along with a spoon and/or a straw. It consists in ground ice which is thick and topped with juices of different flavors that can be combined, regularly the most common flavors are pineapple and strawberry juices but it can also be served with berries juice, passion fruit juice (maracuya), chicha morada (purple corn juice), and in some cases but uncommon it can be topped with condensed milk or yogurt. Its very popular in the beaches during summertime, but it also is consumed in the towns and the cities as well. It is sold in carts spread around some streets and avenues of the city, being prepared at the moment (some of them grind the ice in a block with a device or some spoon with a blade like razor in one end, others yet hace the ice already ground stored in a coolerbox) but all of them serve the portion of ice in the cup in front of the customer and then ask which flavor of juice would be poured on top of the ice, then they put a spoon and the straw.
Kala Khatta is a syrup made from the jambul fruit in India and some other parts of South Asia. It is primarily used as a flavoring for Indian ice lollipops or popsicles, sold as street food. Crushed ice is formed into a lump by hand and mounted on a stick to make the lollipop. Kala khatta syrup and seasonings such as salt and pepper are then poured on the lollipop.
