[Keywords / #法式甜點關鍵詞] 糕點、甜點、下午茶,到底誰是誰?/ Pâtisserie, dessert, and goûter, who's who? (for English, please click "see more")

The difference between "pasty" (pâtisserie) and "dessert" (dessert) could be very vague sometimes. Sometimes they are interchangeable, sometimes not. It is even more difficult to distinguish them in Chinese-speaking world as having pastries or desserts is not as institutionalized as in France (or in Western culture in general) and the way of making them is non-identical. It could cause some problems when translating / reading / comprehending texts in different languages.
In this article, I look into the brief history of French pastries and the definition of vocabularies of these two words. Then I try to figure out how they could be differentiated and when they seem to include each other. I also talk about "goûter", the French word for "afternoon tea", and how it got influenced by the five-o'clock fashion originated in the UK. [文法與詞彙Q&A] for example,such as 和 like 的用法
for example,such as 和 like 都可用來舉例,但用法有所不同。
-------------------------------------
1. For example 作“例如”講時,一般只以同類事物或人中的“一個”為例,作插入語,用逗號隔開,可置於句首、句中或句末。
For example, air is invisible. 例如,空氣是看不見的。
He, for example, is a good student. 例如,他就是個好學生。
-------------------------------------
2. such as也作為“例如”講,用來列舉同類人或事物中的幾個例子。
Some of the European languages come from Latin, such as French, Italian, and Spanish. 有些歐洲語言來源於拉丁語,例如,法語、義大利語和西班牙語。
Boys such as John and James are very friendly. 像約翰和詹姆斯這樣的男孩都很友好。
-------------------------------------
3. like 在日常生活中的對話也用來表示舉例,可與such as互換。*
但such as用於舉例可以分開使用,此時不可與like互換。
Some warm-blooded animals,like/such as the cat,the dog or the wolf,do not need to hibernate. 一些溫血動物,像貓、狗和狼都不需要冬眠。
He has several such reference books as dictionaries and handbooks.

注意! 使用such as來舉例子,只能舉出其中的一部分,一般不能全部舉出。若全部舉出,要改用namely(意為“即”)。
He knows four languages, namely Chinese, English, Russian and French. 他精通四門語言,即漢語、英語、俄語和法語。
-------------------------------------
*like可以與such as互換嗎?
They are interchangeable in daily conversations, but on some tests SUCH AS the GMAT, there is a slight difference between the two.
like = similar to
such as = for example
-Can you buy me some desserts like pudding or flan?
The use of "like" here CAN suggest that the speaker doesn't really want pudding or flan, but rather some other desserts that are similar to pudding or flan.
-Can you buy me some desserts "such as" pudding or flan?
The use of "such as" means that the speaker wants pudding of flan.

[文法與詞彙Q&A]
by、 through、 via 的區別
1. by:在旁邊,從旁邊,到旁邊(強調從旁邊經過或路過)
(1)pass/go by是指從旁邊經過或走過;
(2)something is done by somebody是指某事在某人身邊(旁邊)被做完,借指某事由某人完成;
*Please note that most native speakers would still use "by email."
前面已經分析過by的本義,很明顯by表示“通過某種方式或途徑”的用法(如by train / by means of等)是借用或引申推廣出來的,但by在表示該意思的時候有個前提:主體自己要跟隨工具在一起,這是by的本義(在附件、在旁邊)所決定的,或者說,主體和工具不能發生分離(這是by與via的本質區別)。*
*This is only one possible explanation. However, to native speakers, "by" and "via" are interchangeable in this instance.
而via表達的意思是“經由某個人、某個區域、某個工具達到某個目的”,這裡的“人/區域/工具”都是中間媒介,它們起著傳遞、連接等作用,這時候主體跟工具是註定要分離的。也就說:
(1)send someone a note via email 是指經由email的傳遞給某人發個便條通知某人某事情;
(2)travel from A to C via B 是指從A地出發經由B地前往C地;
(3)broadcast via satellite 是指經由(或通過)衛星進行廣播。
