During my travels, be they for business or for leisure, I have come to realize that public libraries are important landmarks of cities around the world. The Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., the National Library of St. Mark’s in Venice, Prague’s Strahov Monastery’s Library – all of these “Houses of Knowledge” serve as a testament to the importance of information in the development of these metropoles. This inspired me to think about the role of libraries in the urban fabric of Taipei. While some of them are true gems, such as the beautiful and environmentally sustainable Beitou Branch Library, others are rather nondescript concrete blocks. I reached out to my team and requested they conduct research on potential beautification initiatives we could implement.
Marcin, our Senior Intern from National Chengchi University, encouraged me to consider a different approach. “True beauty is the beauty from within”, they say, so in our quest to make libraries more relevant we should perhaps prioritize revising library programming. This is how we decided to reach out to our partners across Taipei’s sister cities to learn more about their best practices in making library programs more diverse, more accessible, and more relevant in the digital age.
Michael Lambert, the City Librarian of the San Francisco Public Library, and his team were extremely generous with their time and shared with us in detail how they use library programs to foster multiculturalism, environmental awareness, and circular economy across the Golden City. I was very impressed to learn about the breadth and depth of their programs as well as the willingness of Mr. Lambert’s team to collaborate with other departments and institutions in the City of Francisco. I am certain that our exchange will considerably enrich the new Strategic Plan of our own public libraries here in Taipei.
Last but not least, I sincerely hope that today’s videoconference is just the beginning of a fruitful and long-lasting exchange between Taipei and San Francisco Public Libraries.

【#hkp2018】香港同志遊行2018 關注議題:性別友善設施 | Hong Kong Pride Parade 2018 Highlight of the year: All-Gender Facilities (Scroll down for ENG)

Highlight of the year: All-Gender Facilities
2018 Hong Kong Pride Parade Highlight: All-Gender Facilities
In a gender binary environment, facilities such as toilets, changing rooms and even fitting rooms in shops are differentiated by just two genders. Some minorities such as transgender people or family carers may feel embarrassed when using these facilities. Increasing ‘All-Gender Facilities’ in the community not only benefits the majority of people but also pay respect and gives a better choice for those minorities.
How many times do you have to visit the public toilet every day? Have you ever stopped drinking water just because you are afraid of entering public toilets? Did you know that some transgender people are afraid of going to public swimming pools, changing rooms or even toilets because their appearance and their gender on their identity cards do not match each other? ‘All-Gender Facilities’ provides a better and safer environment for transgender people.
There is an increasing number of discussions on transgender topics. In June last year, the Hong Kong government has launched a public consultation on legal gender recognition including whether a gender recognition scheme should be established in Hong Kong. However, this is only the first phase of public consultation and it only took place 4 years after the ‘W Case’ had won in court. It is still unknown when there will be a second phase of consultation and whether the Hong Kong government would consider establishing any laws on this issue.
Although legalizing gender recognition is nowhere in sight, we can still take our very first step in our daily lives to enhance the living environment for our transgender friends. Every organization, company, institute or even small shops could establish an ‘All-Gender Toilet’ while public or private leisure facilities or venues could establish an ‘All-Gender Changing Room’ so that transgender people do not have to choose between male or female facilities and that they could use these ‘All-Gender Facilities’ anytime without feeling embarrassed or stressed.
‘All- Gender Facilities’ also brings a friendly space for families and their carers of different genders. A woman once claimed that she wouldn’t allow her daughter going into the same toilet with a man who identifies himself as a female. Yet, she had never stepped into the shoes of those fathers who had to take care of their daughters and didn’t know which toilet to go to when they are in public. Did this woman think that the daughter should follow her father into a male toilet where it may be dangerous and has little privacy? Establishing the ‘All-Gender Facilities’ does not mean replacing male and female facilities. We do respect the thought of using male and female as a differentiation to all kinds of facilities but at the same time, we cannot obliterate the importance of ‘All- Gender Facilities’.
Nowadays, we can find gender friendly toilets in some universities, shopping malls, markets, hospitals and small shops. The Hong Kong Pride Parade Committee 2018 encourages everyone to support and promote the establishment of ‘All- Gender Facilities’ so as to public educate the majority to understand the existence and needs of the minorities thus making Hong Kong a gender friendly city.

#2016reflections 1/3: Me //
.
Ever since becoming a mom, the word 'me' ceased to be of importance. Without realizing, I've put Tyler above myself and have many times discarded my own needs, desires and dreams. I began my journey in motherhood thinking that a good mom is one who puts her kids above herself, and a good mom never asks, never seeks, and never dreams. I put all my ambitions aside and purposed myself to be a full-time stay-at-home-mom, fully devoting my time to Tyler. My ambitions, ministry and leisure will take a backseat. A good mom sacrifices herself for her kids. And I wanted to be a good mom.
.
But God never let my dreams die. It wasn't until God rebuked me that I broke out of this mindset. He told me, "My dear, I am not done with you. I have placed gifts in you for a reason. I have placed you in this church for a reason. And I have placed this dream in you for a reason. Don't let yourself go, because I am not done with you." That was when I had a change of mind and heart, and took a leap of faith to step out. This year, one of the biggest things I did for myself was to put my foot in the water and take a plunge for what I've always dreamed of pursuing. It wasn't without obstacles, not at all. There were roadblocks all along the way, but I know that if God birthed this dream in me, He will realize it and make it happen.
.
2017 will be a scarily exciting year. Will need to up my juggling skills with Tyler in one hand, and my new venture in the other. I don't know how my life is gonna be from now on, but I do know that if He is for me, no one can be against me. I know I cannot even dream up what God has planned up for me. It's going to be quite a ride. Come on, 2017. I'm ready for you! #bestof2016
