African swine fever 非洲豬瘟 (ASF) returns and more than 4,000 pigs have to be culled again. After thorough disinfection of the slaughterhouse, pig supply from China, the source of infection, will continue 🤷🏻♀️
This is the second time in this month that the government ordered to cull pigs in Hong Kong, as a dead pig in HK, imported from Meizhou, Guangdong 廣東梅州, was tested positive for ASF. Not only pig traders and butchers are greatly affected during the closure of the slaughterhouse, but also the public. There will be less fresh pork supply, the most consumed type of meat in Hong Kong, in the coming days and it stokes inflation.
To prevent further cases of ASF, the government suggests slaughtering pigs on the day they arrive at the slaughterhouse so as to shorten the time live pigs stay in the slaughterhouse. If I understand that correctly, the infected and unhealthy pig will not be died of African Swine Flu, instead, we eat them. (* although it is claimed that this virus is not harmful to human)
The government has been exercising stringent inspections at the Hong Kong-China border, but ASF still returns. The problem will remain unsolve if we don’t get to the root of the problem. Disinfecting the slaughterhouses cannot improve the situation as the pigs are infected before they arrive at Hong Kong.
Should we stop the import of fresh pig from China first? Should the government consider increasing the supply of frozen pork when there is no fresh pork? Or import fresh pig from other countries instead? What do you think?
