🐽Food Idioms 美國生活用語:Pork 更多豬肉
上週都在說豬的壞話,這禮拜來為豬豬平反一下~其實豬有許多正向用語,快來瞧瞧~
1⃣ live (or eat) high on/off the hog
2⃣ go whole hog
3⃣go hog wild
4⃣ hog heaven
5⃣road hog
--
Speaking of pigs, did you know that “hog” is another word for pig? Specifically, a hog is a large pig bred to be eaten. And people eat a lot of pork, so naturally there are lots of hog-related idioms.
首先,你知道 hog 是豬的別稱嗎?具體來說,hog「肉豬」是指專門飼養來吃的豬。因為大家愛吃豬肉,所以當然有許多跟 hog 有關的生活用語。
One of the most interesting is 1⃣“live (or eat) high on/off the hog,” which means to live a luxurious, comfortable life. Why does it have this meaning? Because the most expensive cuts of meat come from high on the hog. Ex: Kevin has been living high on the hog since he won the lottery.
首先,一個最饒富趣味的諺語是 live/eat high on/off the hog,指過著奢華舒適的生活。為什麼會有這個意思呢?因為最貴的豬肉肉品剛好都來自於豬的上半身。如:Kevin has been living high on the hog since he won the lottery.(凱文中樂透之後,就一直過著奢華闊氣的生活。)
Lots of people enjoy pork, but what if you eat the whole hog? 2⃣ “Go whole hog” means to do something in a very thorough or enthusiastic way. Ex: We decided to go whole hog and stay in the presidential suite. 3⃣You can also “go hog wild,” which means to behave in an uncontrolled and excited manner. Ex: The kids went hog wild while their parents were away on vacation.
很多人愛吃豬肉,不過若是要你吃下整頭豬呢?go whole hog 指「豁出去做某事;徹底把某件事做完」如:We decided to go whole hog and stay in the presidential suite.(我們決定豁出去住總統套房。)類似用法還有go hog wild,指「興奮過度做過頭」,如:The kids went hog wild while their parents were away on vacation.(爸媽放假出門時,小孩在家裡玩瘋了。)
We all know about heaven, 4⃣but what is “hog heaven”? It’s a state of idle bliss and contentment. Ex: Sitting on the sofa drinking beer and watching the game, Mike was in hog heaven. And finally, 5⃣there are “road hogs.” Since hogs are known for their greedy behavior, a road hog is someone who “hogs” the road. Ex: I hope the cops give that road hog a ticket.
我們都知道天堂,但什麼是hog heaven「豬天堂」?就是形容相當愉快滿足的狀態,如:Sitting on the sofa drinking beer and watching the game, Mike was in hog heaven.(坐在沙發上喝啤酒看球賽,麥可就像身處極樂之地一樣。)最後是road hog,豬一向以貪心著稱,所以road hog指的是開車亂搶路的人,如:I hope the cops give that road hog a ticket. (真希望警察給那搶路的駕駛人一張紅單。)
【✍重點單字】
1. win the lottery「中樂透」
2. thorough「徹底的」
3. idle「閒閒無事的」
4. bliss「幸福」
5. contentment「滿足」:為名詞,形容詞 content「滿足的」。
6. give sb. a ticket「開罰單」:ticket 在這裡當「罰單」。

Food Idioms Part 2 🇺🇸美國生活用語~水果篇Part 2
My car is a real lemon.🍋我的車子很酸??
You can never have too much fruit, so let’s explore some more fruit-related idioms! 再多水果都不嫌多,本週繼續來看更多生活中的水果用語吧!
1. life is not a bowl of cherries
2. peaches and cream
3. a lemon
4. a plum job
5. sour grapes
--
Because everyone knows that cherries are delicious, the phrase, 🍒 “life is a bowl of cherries” means that life is wonderful. Unfortunately, the phrase is often used in the negative. Ex: Life isn’t a bowl of cherries when you’re going through a bitter divorce.
大家都知道櫻桃好吃,片語 life is a bowl of cherries 就是形容人生如櫻桃甜美,不過可惜的是,這個片語常用在負面狀況,如:Life isn’t a bowl of cherries when you’re going through a bitter divorce.(當你經歷苦澀的離婚時,就會知道生活並非十全十美。)
Peaches are also delicious, and peaches and cream are even better, 🍑so if something is “peaches and cream,” it’s enjoyable and trouble-free. Ex: He promised that if she married him, life would be peaches and cream. What’s another fruit that’s sweet and delicious? Ripe plums. 🍴A “plum job/assignment,” therefore, is one that’s very desirable. Ex: How did you manage to get such a plum assignment?
水蜜桃也是相當可口,要是跟鮮奶油一起吃就更加美味了,所以如果某事用peaches and cream來形容,就是指相當愉快且無憂無慮。如:He promised that if she married him, life would be peaches and cream.(他承諾如果嫁給他,她的生活將會幸福美滿。)還有哪種水果又甜又好吃?成熟的李子。所以,plum job/assignment就是說該工作待遇極佳、令人嚮往,如:How did you manage to get such a plum assignment?(你是怎麼拿到這麼優的工作?)
But not all fruit is sweet. Take lemons for example. They may be good in lemonade, but nobody wants to eat a lemon. 🍋So if somebody calls a car (or other machine) a lemon, it means that it doesn’t work well. Ex: The used car I bought was a real lemon.
不過,並非全部的水果都是甜的,以檸檬為例,拿來做成檸檬水是還不錯喝,但恐怕沒人想直接吃。所以如果有人叫某台車(或是其他機器)a lemon,就是指這台車子運轉不靈光、問題很多。如:The used car I bought was a real lemon.(我買的二手車一堆問題。)
Grapes are another tasty fruit, but what about sour grapes? If you ate sour grapes, you’d probably have a sour expression on your face. 🍇This is why “sour grapes” describes a negative attitude someone shows toward something because they can’t have it themselves. Ex: Saying the literary award is meaningless is just sour grapes.
葡萄也是很好吃,但酸葡萄呢?如果你吃了酸葡萄,大概會是一臉酸樣,這就是為何會用 sour grapes 來形容某人得不到想要的東西時的心情,也就是「吃不到葡萄說葡萄酸」。如:Saying the literary award is meaningless is just sour grapes.(說文學獎沒有意義其實是酸葡萄心理。)
【✍關鍵單字】
1. cream:「鮮奶油」,奶油則是butter。
2. manage to:「設法做到,努力完成」,指需花費心力才能達成某事。
3. ripe:「(果實、榖物)熟成的」

🥊 Boxing Idioms Part 2
本週繼續拳擊諺語 👊 Round Two!先來猜猜以下3個用語的意思:
1. beat sb. to the punch「搶先出拳」→ ❓
2. roll with the punches「順著對方出拳躲避」→ ❓
3. down for the count「輸了」→ ❓
-
In boxing, it’s all about the punches, so there are plenty of punch-related idioms. Every boxer wants to beat his opponent to the punch—i.e. punch the other guy before the other guy punches him, 📌 so “beat sb. to the punch” can also mean “to do or achieve something before sb. else.” Ex: I wanted to ask Kate to dance, but Dan beat me to the punch.
When your opponent is throwing punches at you left and right, you need to roll with the punches—move in a way that lessens the damage—if you want to stay in the fight. in everyday life, 📌 “roll with the punches” means to adjust or adapt to difficulties to lessen their impact. Ex: Life has many ups and downs, so you’d better learn to roll with the punches.
If you’re not able to roll with the punches, you may get KO’d (KO stands for “knock out”). When that happens, the referee counts to 10, and if you don’t get up before he finishes, you’re “down for the count,” and the fight is over. Outside of boxing, 📌 “down for the count” can mean failing, defeated or sound asleep. Ex: The company has so much debt that it’s likely down for the count.
【 ✍ 關鍵單字 】
1. punch:「出拳、揮擊」
2. lessen:「減輕、降低」
3. adjust/adapt to:「適應、習慣~」
4. KO:「擊倒」,原為拳擊術語,為knock out的縮寫。
5. referee:「(運動比賽的)裁判」,拳擊除了有台上裁判referee,也有judge,即台下的「評判員」。
【 ✍ 中譯】
拳擊簡單來說就是出拳的運動,所以有不少跟出拳有關的生活用語。拳擊手總是想比對手搶先出拳,📌 因此beat sb. to the punch也有『搶先某人一步、捷足先登』的意思。如:I wanted to ask Kate to dance, but Dan beat me to the punch.(我本來想約凱特,卻被丹搶先一步。)
當對手朝你左右揮拳猛烈攻擊時,你就需要順著對方揮拳躲避,以降低傷害、爭取站在場上的時間。所以,若是說你要在日常生活中roll with the punches,就是要你順應困難情況做出應變,以降低傷害,也就是『隨機應變;兵來將擋、水來土掩』。如:Life has many ups and downs, so you’d better learn to roll with the punches.(人生有起有落,你最好要學會隨機應變。)
當你招架不住對方攻勢而被擊倒在地,裁判會從十開始倒數,如果你在倒數結束前都無法站起來,那你就是down for the count「輸了」,這回合也隨之結束。📌 出了拳擊場,片語down for the count也有『失敗、被擊倒;熟睡』之意。如:The company has so much debt that it’s likely down for the count.(公司負債累累,快完蛋了。)
