絲瓜消暑又瘦身
絲瓜又名勝瓜,是炎夏不可錯過的消暑蔬菜,香港買到的多數是稜角絲瓜(另一種為圓筒絲瓜又稱水瓜),以稜角明顯、結實具重量感為之上品。從中醫角度來看,絲瓜性涼,有清熱解毒的功效,其瓜絡更能通經活絡、清熱化痰、利尿消腫,尤其適合濕熱型肥胖人士,適量食用有助減肥。夏天可按體質適量食用絲瓜,有助紓緩因天氣炎熱引致的口乾、咳嗽、咳嗽多黃痰、婦女帶下過多或味重的症狀。絲瓜亦能安胎通乳,所以懷孕中或生產後的婦女都可適量食用。

消暑茶療:絲瓜絡荷葉茶

材料:絲瓜絡10克、荷葉10克、麥冬9克、冰糖適量
做法:材料洗淨放保溫瓶,以熱開水沖洗一遍,注入熱開水焗約15-20分鐘至香味透出,待水變暖後加入蜂蜜拌勻即可。此茶能反覆沖泡至味淡,建議一星期飲用兩至三天,連續兩星期為一個療程。

Luffa to clear heat and slim down
Luffa is an important heat-relieving vegetable to consume during summer. The more common variety in Hong Kong is angular luffa (another type of luffa is cylindrical in shape). A premium-grade angular luffa normally has clear angular edges, meets a certain weight requirement, and is compact.
From the perspective of Chinese Medicine, luffa is cool in nature, and it can clear heat and toxins from the body. Its fibers can also promote the circulation of the meridians, clear heat, clear phlegm, induce urination, and relieve edema. Hence, it is suitable for individuals who are plump in size and have a damp heat body constitution. Consuming an appropriate amount of luffa can also help with weight loss.
Consider eating luffa during summer (based on our body constitution), as it can help relieve heat-related symptoms such as dry mouth, cough, phlegm, and smelly vaginal discharge. Luffa, on the other hand, is good for pregnant mothers or mothers who have just delivered their babies, as the vegetable is good for the fetus and can increase milk flow.
Luffa - cold in nature, it clears heat and removes toxins, reduces phlegm, stabilizes pregnancy and aids lactation. When taken appropriately, it can relieve summer-related symptoms such as dry mouth, cough with yellow phlegm, alleviate high volume of vaginal discharge or discharge that has strong odor, and improve postpartum lactation difficulty.
Luffa pith - mild in nature, it can improve the Meridian’s circulation, promote diuresis to relieve bloating.
Tea remedy to clear summer heat
Effects: Clears heat and dispels dampness. Relieves heat stroke, excessive sweating and fatigue.
Ingredients: 10g luffa pith, 10g lotus leaves, 9g radix ophiopogonis, rock sugar to taste
Preparation: Rinse all ingredients thoroughly and place into thermos, rinse with hot water once. Then add in hot water again and steep for 15-20 minutes. Add an appropriate amount of rock sugar and mix until it melts. You can re-brew this tea until its flavor weakens. For best results, drink consecutively for 2-3 days. Two weeks for a treatment.

食材小貼士:
茯苓性平,有健脾滲濕、安神功效,適合各種體質人士食用。
西洋菜冬瓜薏米湯
功效:清熱利濕、消腫減肥,紓緩身體四肢困重、肥胖等症狀。
材料:西洋菜1束(約1斤)、冬瓜連皮600克(約1斤)、乾瑤柱3-4枚、生薏米30克、茯苓15克、蜜棗2枚
做法:
1. 所有材料洗淨,西洋菜常藏有小昆蟲,以鹽水泡二十分鐘,再沖水備用。冬瓜連皮切大塊備用。
2. 鍋中加入2500毫升水,放入全部材料,武火煮至水滾,調文火煮1小時,最後下鹽調味即可。

Soup to clear heat after sun exposure
We might not develop a sunburn or heat stroke after playing under the hot summer sun, but there is a high chance for us to feel dizzy, get a headache, have tightness on the chest, experience dryness in the mouth, and feel exhausted after being exposed to the pathogenic factor of the summer-heat, as the body is not able to effectively dissipate heat under such a condition.
It would be great to consume soup that can clear the summer-heat. Melons and gourds such as winter melon, old cucumber, zucchini, and Gassho melon are harvested during summer. They all have heat-clearing properties and are suitable ingredients to make soup with lotus leaf, which can dissipate the summer-heat, clear the mind and brighten vision, and lower the cholesterol levels. This soup is especially suitable for individuals to consume during the hot summer season.
Tips on ingredient:
Poria with Hostwood is mild-natured. Calms the heart and mind, strengthens the spleen. Suitable for all body types.
Astragalus root and blighted wheat soup with millet
Effects: clears heat and dispels dampness. Reduces bloating and aids weight loss. Relieves symptoms such as fatigue, heavy limbs and fat.
Ingredients: 1 bunch of watercress(around 1 catty), 600g winter melon with skin(around 1 catty), 3-4 dried scallop, 30g coix seed, 15g poria with hostwood, 2 candied dates
Preparation:
1. Rinse all ingredients thoroughly. Watercress is prone to small insects so soak in salt water for 20 minutes, then rinse again with regular water. Cut the winter melon into large chunks.
2. Combine all ingredients with 2500ml of water in a pot and cook on high heat until boiling. Turn to low heat and simmer for 1 hour. Add salt to taste.

When making soup, we can replace meat with beans, so even our vegan friends can enjoy it as well. Nonetheless, do not consume them excessively as they might cause bloating.
Runner bean – also known as ‘ho bao dao’ in Cantonese, is mild in nature. It can help to dispel dampness from the body and relieve water retention and athlete’s foot. Since runner bean is rich in fibers, it can improve the digestive system and bowel movements a well.
Rice bean - induces diuresis to reduce swelling, clears heat and removes toxins. Relieves edema, lower body swelling, itchy skin. Suitable for those with damp heat body type. Not suitable for those with yin deficient, blood asthenia body types. Suitable for people with gout.
Hyacinth bean - strengthens spleen and eliminates dampness, suitable for those with qi deficient and phlegm and dampness body types, especially those who are prone to diarrhea after due to having dampness from an asthenic spleen. Not suitable for those prone to constipation. Suitable for people with gout.
Soya bean - mild in nature, strengthens spleen and promotes diuresis. It can relieve edema from asthenic spleen and lack of appetite. Suitable for all body types. Note that eating too much may cause abdominal bloating, those with gout should avoid.
Black soya bean - mild in nature, replenishes kidney, strengthen spleen, promotes diuresis and lower qi. It can relieves symptoms like lower back pain, edema, and frequent cramping due to asthenic kidney. Suitable for all body types. Not suitable for those with asthenic weak spleen and stomach.
Mung bean - cold in nature, clears heat and removes toxins, relieves summer heat and dispels dampness. It can relieve symptoms of heat stroke, edema, and itchy skin. Suitable for those with damp heat body type. Not suitable for those with cold stomach, loose stool and long-term diarrhea.
Black-eyed pea - strengthens spleen and stomach. Relieves indigestion and stomach bloating due to asthenic spleen and stomach. Suitable for all body types, but not for those prone to constipation. Suitable for people with gout.
