In an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party, Chinese President Xi Jinping hailed party's successes and the "national rejuvenation" it has been able to achieve.
Speaking in front of a reported crowd of 70,000 at a highly-choreographed ceremony in Tiananmen Square, Xi also vowed that China would no longer be "bullied, oppressed or subjugated" by foreign countries.

The G7 slammed China Sunday over abuses against minorities including forced labour in the western region of Xinjiang, and on pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong. 香港回歸（英語：Hong Kong reunification），1947-1997年普遍稱為中國收回香港，術語常稱為香港主權移交（英語：Transfer of sovereignty over Hong Kong）、英語常稱香港交接（英語：Handover of Hong Kong），是指中華人民共和國政府和英國政府透過《中英聯合聲明》作出承諾，中華人民共和國政府於1997年7月1日對香港（包括香港島、九龍和新界）恢復行使主權，聯合王國政府於同日將香港交還給中華人民共和國的歷史事件。1997年7月1日0時0分，香港特別行政區成立，結束近153年的英治時期，並按照《香港特別行政區基本法》落實「一國兩制」、「高度自治」、「港人治港」，以香港特別行政區行政長官為政府首長。大部分華裔香港永久居民不論意願自動獲得中華人民共和國國籍，可申領香港特別行政區護照。每年7月1日公眾假期名為「香港特別行政區成立紀念日」。
