It’s been years since I read to my own children, so I was a bit rusty reading a storybook for the kidsREAD programme this morning. I chose “Go to sleep, Gecko!”, a Balinese folktale retold by Margaret Read MacDonald.
The kidsREAD programme has come a long way since I launched it with Yaacob Ibrahim 10 years ago. Our aim was a nation-wide reading programme to help children from poorer families learn to read.
National Library Board, Singapore, The People's Association and the self-help groups have done very well. More than 27,000 children have read with us. Many volunteers, from 11 to 71, have taken part in the reading sessions.
A big thank you to all of you for sharing the joy and benefits of reading with our little ones! - LHL
