‘Yokai War’ - A war to fight our inner demons, the source of negativity from within ourselves that is limiting us from becoming a better version of ourself. As simple as it may sound, this war is faced by each and every soul among us everyday. How we fight and the outcome of it will define our personality and how we live our lives.
Yokai are a certain type of supernatural creatures in Japanese folklore, like ghosts and monsters. In this collection, each character is a Yokai representing a bad behaviour of a human which must be destroyed.
The interpretation of an artwork is better and more interestingly unraveled by the artists’ own creativities, so we engaged with two international designers and gave them the freedom to achieve the concept of this release with concept direction from our Noh Salleh himself.
For the first time ever, Hikari Riders collaborated with John Tradd, a young Russian professional tattoo artist who has managed to recreate ancient Japanese artwork like Ukiyo-e from the Edo period, among others, and a young mangaka from Kyoto known as He Chua whose approach to the artwork seems effortless but is very much in line with the theme and our identity.
