「末代武士」這一支預告採用了許多非英語發音「外語片」的行銷策略(即使這部電影中許多日本角色都操流利英語):盡量去掉對白,然後將異國風情放到最大。
對「末代武士」來說,這個策略足以掩蓋整部電影大部份可疑之處,比如Tom Cruise的誇張表演、氾濫自溺的英雄主義和失真的異國文化描述。
這支預告其實是下面這支前導預告的改良升級版。
下面這支前導預告非常酷,但終究是前導預告,沒有辦法提供人物和情節的概觀,充其量就是一首很酷的音樂錄影帶。真正的預告需要交代人物和情節,這些才能帶觀眾進戲院。

而這支正式預告非常精妙地用最少的對白把情節跟人物交代建立起來,而無需揭露太多故事情節動線。比如第5秒開始到第20秒這段僅僅持續十幾秒的簡單對話,一下子角色性格有了,故事前提也有了。接下來就用不著講話了,高明!
兩支預告都使用了來自專做預告音樂的創作團隊ParodiFair的同一首曲子 :"The End of the Beginning" 。這首動靜分明、速度感充沛又情感激昂的曲子是近年來電影預告中非常成功的音樂使用案例,甚至比電影本身的Hans Zimmer配樂還要稱職。
這支正式預告相較前導預告做了一些改良:前導預告中前半部本來純粹的太鼓聲被更複雜的節奏取代了,這個做法是避免預告看起來太抽象、太藝術性,然後更有效地堆砌戲劇張力,迎接後面一氣呵成的音樂高潮。和前導預告一樣的是,在ParodiFair的原曲之上,增加了從一開始一直維持到結束的低音弦樂,將懸疑氣氛貫穿整支預告,而且一直到預告結束還揮之不去。
高潮之前,又巧妙地抽取這幾句其實不太高明的電影對白拼湊在一起:
"What do you want?"
"To know my enemy."
"What do you want from me?"(還來啊)
"What do you want for yourself?"
突然之間角色動機有了,意境也有了,整部電影立刻變成是一場自我追尋的旅程(實際上電影根本沒有做到!)。本來沒有的東西被神奇剪接術無中生有,再穿插紅色字卡上的神秘漢字,異國風情和東方哲理被強化到極限,觀眾瞬間對這部電影充滿想像。
這是一支足以誘騙觀眾進戲院的預告,成功地賣給觀眾一個緊湊懸疑、異國風情和情緒衝突兼備的印象。
這支成功的預告的和下面這個揭露比較多劇情和對白的文藝風版本比較,優勝劣敗可說立馬分高下。這是一個不太經得起揭露的電影,下面這支預告除了讓電影的缺點一覽無遺之外,預告本身敘事節奏緩慢雜沓,對吸引觀眾來說就是失敗的。

【Bad Movie】
實際上這部電影可說是完全行不通。
預告中看起來還算有趣的片段都是主角受困山上被迫與武士共處的文化碰撞部分。但導演Edward Zwick和編劇John Logan卻把大部份力氣拿去營造那個比「Braveheart 英雄本色」愚蠢百倍的英雄主義結尾戰爭高潮。
我突然想到如果把電影交給經常處理文化衝突的導演Peter Weir,或許可能行得通。這部電影的結構有如Peter Weir的「Witness 證人」,有一個類型電影的框架前後包圍,但夾在中間的牛肉則是有趣的文化衝突和異國風情。
Edward Zwick以一個外國人的身份在描述日本文化時,處處展露了井底之蛙的獵奇,看在同為東亞人的我們眼中更是刺眼。類似的課題, Bernardo Bertolucci的「The Last Emperor 末代皇帝」雖也是獵奇,卻真的找到真正引人入勝的迷人事物。
然後,Tom Cruise誇張自溺的表演方式讓故事的一廂情願惡化十倍。如果換成表演方式比較誠懇的Russell Crowe或許還能有一點說服力。
