I studied in Sydney, Australia for 7 years from 1990. Below is received from a old Aussie friend by WhatsApp. I did some FCs, and seems this was written in May 2020. Not sure if he has any new/updated views.
*OPINION*
*Australian ABC Radio Peter Goers:
With China, many Aussies are absolute hypocrites.*
‘Revolution is just a T-shirt away,” sings Billy Bragg.
*The T-shirts are made in China like everything else. We wear and consume the proof of the success of the Chinese Revolution and they drink our wine, use our iron ore, eat our tucker and enrich our entire tourism and education sectors.*
It is almost impossible for almost anyone in the world to go a single day without buying or using something from China.
*China is the engine of the world and now rules the world economically. * We once ludicrously feared Reds under the beds. Now they’ve made the beds we lie in. One in five people in the world is Chinese.
*The People’s Republic of China (as even ardent conservatives attest) achieved the greatest social, political and economic miracle in world history by raising 1.5 billion people out of feudal poverty into a middle class in 50 years*
China has wisely followed the American and British examples of economic colonisation of the world but avoided the appalling errors of fighting useless and expensive wars. *China has not caused a war for hundreds of years.*
The economy of the world is predicated on China. *We ignore China’s communism when we make money from it, but because of the COVID-19 virus we are suddenly sabre-rattling and loathing China’s political system. Hypocrisy rules.*
Britain lied about COVID-19 mortality rates, and Trump’s US continues to exacerbate the virus. Has Australia demanded an inquiry into those countries? No. Japan has been building islands for decades with no international criticism. China builds islands and we send gunboats.
Australia rails against China’s human rights violations yet we continue to imprison refugees in concentration camps and continue to treat Aboriginal people appallingly. Australia is the nation which persecuted and demeaned the Chinese and others through the iniquitous White Australia policy.
Australia continues to treat the Chinese with racism and suspicion through an apparent genetic disposition to distrust them. We despair of Chinese surveillance of its citizens yet increase surveillance on our own. We despair of the Chinese persecution of minority races yet we are eternally trying to weaken our own Racial Discrimination Act.
Our Government is trying to suppress the press. We welcomed the English lords Vestey and McAlpine owning half of northern Australia, we allow American surveillance and military bases and yet we resent any Chinese investment in Australia.
China is a developing nation and is far from perfect – but we have much to learn from it. The cold war against China is damaging and dangerous. The British tried twice to poison and weaken the Chinese through opium addiction, invaded China and stole Hong Kong. There are Australians and Americans who’d gladly try to repeat that.
Sadly, Sinophobia is back officially and publicly as Australians are spitting on Chinese-Australians. Shame.
We are encouraged to criticise China but we rail against Chinese criticism of us. Isn’t Professor Kam Louie, of Hong Kong University, right when he says Australian leadership is “male, pale and stale”, and aren’t the Chinese right when they say Australia is America’s dog?
The Chinese came to Australia before the British, traded peacefully with Aboriginal people and had the good manners not to invade, claim the country and dispossess and massacre them.
The US and Britain are dying. China is flourishing. Napoleon was right when he said 200 years ago: “China is a sleeping giant. When she wakes, she will move the world.”
Australia must move with and not against China with respect and showing good example. Then we grow together in the great leap forward. Put that on a T-shirt made in China.
*Peter Goers can be heard weeknights and Sundays on ABC Radio Adelaide”*

#WuHan #Pneumonia
#CoronaVirus
#Taiwan
I have been observing that the epidemic of China, South Korea, Italy, Iran, and other countries worsens dramatically, the Wuhan Pneumonia confirmed cases not only increase from two-digit to serious outbreak, but also rise rapidly with three-digit to surge the community infection terribly which finally lead to collapse the health care system. Why?
From my perspective, the reasons which demolish those countries` medical system are that the unwillingness to implement the border controlling, no tracing individuals who contacted the confirmed case and no home quarantine requirement to these individuals. Worse than that is allowing the mildness confirmed cases and the individuals who had contacted those confirmed cases to go freely everywhere. Then Wuhan pneumonia Covid-19 spreads, the epidemic outbreak, and destroys the medical system eventually!
When many country’s health authorities and the international media recognize Taiwan’s epidemic preventions as a Gold Standard, people may ask ‘what has Taiwan done right?” The answers would be early intervention, a clear command structure and transparent communication with the public. Plus the high quality of health care system and affordable cost to everyone.
There are several decisions being made by Taiwan government to arrest the spread of the WuHan pneumonia (COVID- 19) :
First at all, the efforts of epidemic prevention work are coordinated by the Minister of Health and Welfare Commander - Chen Shizhong, and the command system is consisting of medical, public health, epidemic prevention experts.
Taiwan government conducts the quarantine and at-home self-management according to the travel history. In addition, the disclosure of travel history is not only dependent on individuals’ description, but also revealed from the health insurance card thru vpn cloud.
Furthermore, the Taiwan authority also makes decisions to control the border and manage the travel alert. Besides, all the travelers return from the epidemic area have to be quarantine for 14 days at government expense. Every confirmed case in Taiwan is not only hospitalized into the negative-pressure ward treatment and quarantine regardless of light or severe cases covered by the National Health Insurance. Taiwan CDC also traces each one of the confirmed case contacted. Taiwan government will test those people who have contacted with the confirmed case in government expense. If the result of the test is negative, this person will be required home quarantine for 14 days. If the result is positive, this person will be hospitalized into the negative-pressure ward treatment at government expense. Every home quarantine person will have a subsidy of 1,000 NT per day. Regardless of mild or severe cases, every patient confirmed should be treated and isolated in negative pressure isolation rooms, covered by Health Insurance.
In addition, all of the Academia Sinica, National Health Research Institutes and Taiwan-based Biotechnology Taiwan are co-ordinated by Vice President - Chen, Chien-Jen, work on the Rapid Coronavirus Diagnostic Test, vaccines, medical treatment and medication measures etc. Taiwan’s performance in developing these solutions is in the leading group of the world.
The cooperation and integration among each Ministry is led by the Vice Premier of Executive Yuan, Chi-mai Chen. All the cooperation is to support the epidemic prevention commander. For examples:
- to build 60 sets brand new machines and production lines in order to increase mask production quantity up-to 6 million pieces per day within 20 days. This difficult task is accomplished by the cooperation of Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of national defense.
- the exceptional assistances in against viruses with IT and big data analysis by the IT Minister Audrey Tang.
- the efficient execution of border management by the Ministry of Interior and the customs of Ministry of Finance.
The maintenance of the country`s stability and administrative operation by the
Premier of Executive Yuan, Tseng-chang Su.
The regular high-level national security meetings to coordinate the progress of
each department which is hosted by the President of Taiwan, Tsai Ing-wen, as well as to command the national military and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
My dear friends, this is how my country works on protecting our people. This is our #TAIWAN.

https://twitter.com/gretathunberg/status/1206159412571889664?s=21
=========================
This week, Greta Thunberg was named Person of the Year by the TIME magazine. She is a Swedish Schoolgirl that inspired the “Friday for Future” campaign against climate change. Greta is regarded as the figure of the power of the youth, and inspired many, including me.
I applaud for her statement “We can’t just continue living as if there was no tomorrow, because there is a tomorrow.” There is a future where Greta and I will live long enough to see, and we are responsible to shape it into a desirable one. When the world cheer and appalled for the youth standing up against threats of climate change or dictatorship, we actually all play a role in the fights. No man is an island. We are all living here today, and we will be living here tomorrow as well. It is not only up to the youngsters or the figures to fight for a better future.
Some people are respectable because they indeed did something great and conquered the limitations of humanity— being selfless, leading an Europe-wide climate change campaign, sacrificing their future and even their lived for the sake of fundamental human rights. These figures hope to encourage more people to do the same to really address the issues. It is not up to a few people to resolve problems that requires collective effort.
Climate Change and the fight for democracy in Hong Kong share some similarities. Both of them cannot be resolved simply by the handwork of one place, and China has to be held responsible for both issues, and China’s response to them appears to be similar as well.
Greenhouse gas emissions by China are the largest in the world. It is found by scientific research that global warming cannot be kept below 2 °C unless the emission of greenhouse gas in China falls sharply. China emitted over 12 gigatonnes CO2eq of greenhouse gases and makes up almost 30% of the world total. And in 2018-2019, the emissions shows an increasing trend, contrary to the promise China made in the Copenhagen Accord and Paris Agreement. However, when China were asked publicly about this, its response is simply “China is a developing countries and it is in desperate needs of economic development”. This clearly shows China does not take the pledge it made in the global arena as promises it has to fulfil.
China made a Joint-Declaration together with Britain before the Handover of Hong Kong to promised “One Country, Two System” and universal suffrage for Hong Kong in 1984. The Joint-Declaration is bounded Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties, which is an international agreement governing treaties between states. Now it is clear that China is unwilling to keep its promise, and worse still, China has recently declared the Joint-Declaration to be invalid on its own. The Joint-Declaration was a historical document that no longer had any practical significance, China said.
The two examples illustrate that China is never trustworthy and do not take any rules into consideration. It will simply do anything it wants, no matter what are the norms and regulations that it should follow. It takes more than just the youth to address the problem. Greta and the participants of the strike alone can never hold China responsible for breaking its promise. Hong Kong’s youth along can never hold China responsible for violating international treaties. The world has to stand in solidarity to be able to achieve results and forces China to comply to the norms that all players in the world ought to.
