Why are Hong Kong people so concerned about tear gas?
TG was fired into people’s flat, into elderly centres and next to schools, hospital and markets. More than 10,000 rounds of tear gas were fired in the past 6 months in almost all districts. Children developed rashes and breathing difficulties. Dead birds were seen in some areas with TG fired.

HK police said they had been buying TG canisters made in China, which burn at a higher temperature than ordinary ones. Videos have shown these canisters burst into fire and melts concrete on the street. And many of them have expired.
KKwong, a former chemistry lecturer from Chinese University, said when the round is fired, chlorine and organic matter inside, can theoretically turn into highly toxic dioxins at high temperature which poses a serious health threat. While other reports claim that Cyanide was released during firing of these tear gas.

The government said there is no evidence from academic papers to back the claims that TG can produce dioxins and poses major public health and environmental risks.
However, a frontline journalist has been diagnosed with chloracne, a skin condition that has been linked directly to exposure to dioxin-like substance.

Secretary for Food and Health - Sophia Chan said that the manufacturing details and chemical composition of tear gas cannot be revealed as the force wants such information to be kept secret for operational reasons.
While Hong Kong’s welfare secretary insisted in teargas was less harmful than firing up a barbecue.
And the police claims that burning plastic gives out more dioxins than tear gas does.

So is dioxin released?
