Pfizer halts distribution of anti-smoking drug after finding carcinogen
Pfizer Inc (PFE.N) said on Thursday it is pausing distribution of its anti-smoking treatment, Chantix, after finding elevated levels of cancer-causing agents called nitrosamines in the pills.

In 1996 during a meningitis epidemic in Kano, Nigeria, Pfizer gave 200 children the experimental drug, Trovan. 11 died and dozens were left disabled. Pfizer paid an out of court settlement of $75 million. (See the 2005 film The Constant Gardener)
In 2009 Pfizer paid $2.3 billion after pleading guilty to U.S. criminal charges that it improperly marketed 13 medicines. The largest health care fraud settlement and the largest criminal fine of any kind.
In 2012 Pfizer paid a $1 billion settlement over Pembros

More cases have been brought against Pfizer over other drugs including Chantix, Depo-Testosterone, Effexor, Zoloft, Eliquis and Lipitor.

The UK government has already purchased 40 million doses, and claims that 10 million will be made available before Christmas.

今天的JAMA上再度刊登"Clinical Evidence Synopsis"的單元，配合這次的菸害防治主題，討論的是藥物輔助戒菸有效嗎？
作者們收集了12篇系統性綜論 (由此可知這個主題多麼熱門！) 共267篇臨床研究，總共有101,804位受試者，分析結果顯示：
戒菸藥物 Varenicline (Chantix) 相較於安慰劑，顯著增加6個月以上戒菸成功率 (OR 2.88; 95% CrI 2.40-3.47)
戒菸藥物 Burpropion (Wellbutrin) 相較於安慰劑，同樣比較有效 (OR 1.82; 95% CrI 1.60-2.06)
尼古丁替代治療 (NRT) 也比較有效喔 (OR 1.84; 95% CrI 1.71-1.99)
而Varenicline又顯著地比Burpropion有效 (OR 1.59; 95% CrI 1.29-1.96)
看起來，戒菸...只剩下決心與恆心這兩個東西了～
