Beside illegal wildlife trade, legal trade also damaging the biodiversity in Africa. between 2011-2015 in sub-Saharan African, 2,7 minion of wild animals were traded legally; including 1.2 million of animal skins from animals like the Nile crocodile, the Cape fur seal, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, the African elephant and the common hippo; also, around 1.5 million of live animals like the ball python, the African grey parrot, the emperor scorpion, the leopard tortoise, and the savannah monitor lizard were legally trade as pets. whether these animal were wild-caught or captive-breed, these trades are causing harm and threats to the animal and biodiversity.

Dear President Mnangagwa and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority,
As a supporter of Humane Society International, I am reaching out today to ask that you deny the export of the 35 baby elephants that, after many months in holding pens, are still awaiting transfer to foreign zoos. Following the meeting of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) in Geneva in August this year, the wild capture and export of African elephants from Zimbabwe and Botswana to foreign captive environments, such as zoos and circuses, is forbidden. The CITES ruling takes effect in just a few weeks, and so in the meantime, we implore you to abide by the spirit of the CITES votes by refusing the export of these 35 wild elephants to overseas captive facilities. We urge you instead to authorise their release to a rewilding sanctuary where they have the hope of living a life as close to the wild as possible.
Many African countries, such as the 32 members of the African Elephant Coalition, as well as elephant experts and non-governmental organizations such as Humane Society International and the Humane Society of the United States, have opposed the previous commercial sales of Zimbabwe’s elephants to zoos in China out of conservation and animal welfare concerns. In January 2018, Humane Society International Africa and 33 partners submitted a letter to you pleading to halt the horrific abuse and practice of capturing elephants from the wild for captivity. And now that call has been endorsed by nations across the globe who agreed on a near ban at the recent CITES meeting.
African elephants are extremely social, cognitive and a long-lived species with life-long bonds. The capture of these young elephants has already shattered those vital family bonds, but by doing the right thing now, we can still give them a life of freedom and companionship. HSI stands ready to assist in the relocation of the elephants to a rewilding sanctuary.
I urge you to help these 35 baby elephants. A compassionate decision now by Zimbabwe would be welcomed the world over.
Kind regards,
