Yes, A calorie is a calorie! It’s true that all calories have the same amount of energy. One dietary calorie contains 4,184 Joules of energy. In that respect, a calorie is a calorie. But when it comes to our body, things are not that simple.
The energy we derive from our foods comes from the macronutrients: protein, fats and carbohydrates. When we consume these foods they may be broken down to produce energy, or they may be stored so they can be broken down for energy later on. ⠀
When we eat a kiwi, it has certain amount of calories and there are many health boosting vitamins and minerals that are absorbed by our body whereas processed food, chips for example, with the same amount of calories that kiwi has but there isn’t much of vitamins and minerals.
So, not all FOODS are the same even though they carry the same amount of calories! Some provide more nutrients, some provide less. The quality of what we eat determines the quantity of calories we consume, which impacts not only our weight but also our overall health and well-being. =)
