シャリィは家族みんなで楽しめるファミリーバイクを目指し、1972年デビュー。 オーナーは主に主婦層が多かったが、ヤンキーと呼ばれる若者層にも人気が有った。同じホンダのスーパーカブ、モンキー同様改造パーツが豊富で生産終了した現在でもファンが多い。山梨県では特異的に高いシェアをほこり、シャリィで野良仕事へ向かう中年女性がよく見られた。
車名の由来
エイプ (Ape) とは、英語で類人猿の意。「あらゆる人に最も近い動物として、気軽に乗れる身近なオートバイ」をイメージしている。これはそれまでに発売されたホンダ・モンキー、ホンダ・ゴリラよりも「進化したもの」と言う意味で名づけられた。
